A lot of the Financial Independence and Retire Early (FIRE) community (not all) tend to value the worth of the high paying, predictable income (salary) you get from a 9–5. Up skilling in order to gain promotions is generally worth it more than a side hustle.

However, in saying that, a business IS your asset you are investing in. You could possibly retire early too from a business if you grew it’s value and sold it or if you let it run on it’s own with staff you hire etc etc. Like living off day trading (as a stock comparison) you need to commit your time, energy and essentially life to, in order to reap the benefits of a successful business.

You invest in the business, you reinvest your earnings into the business, the business grows in value and you can either live off the income it produces (much like dividends), sell it, franchise it etc.

So is business worth it? That’s essentially up to you and which investment vehicle you choose for yourself. But if you think 9–5 is bad, wait till you start doing 24/7.
